Head of the Islam in South Asia Unit
Salary c £45,000 - £55,000 dependent on experience
Based London Euston with a move to new purpose-built accommodation in Kings Cross in early summer 2018
The Institute of Ismaili Studies invites applications for the role of head of the Islam in South Asia Unit. The appointee to this post will be the first person in the unit and has the opportunity to create the Unit – which will be part of the IIS’ Department of Academic Research and Publications – in conjunction with the Director of the IIS to meet an extensive research and teaching programme harmonised with the ongoing work of the Institute.
The post-holder will undertake research on: the history, intellectual traditions and diverse denominations of the of the South Asian Muslims; contemporary and emerging issues (such as identity and civil society among others) which the South Asian Muslim communities grapple with; and the living traditions and religious practices of the Ismailis of South Asia, in the wider context of South Asian Shi’i communities and Muslims of other denominations and traditions, organising conferences and arranging for publication accordingly, as well as developing linkages with both scholars in the field and institutions in the countries under review. This role is offered as a three year fixed term contract.
You must have a Doctorate in an area related to Islam in South Asia coupled with extensive publications record on related topics. Teaching experience in the Higher Education sector is also a requirement. You will be familiar with all aspects of research methods including field-based techniques in the countries under consideration. Knowledge of Shi’i and Ismaili history and thought is ideal. In addition, you will have excellent written and oral communication skills, and strong interpersonal skills.
